Today in the U.S., many celebrate the secular holiday called “Thanksgiving.” It originated as a harvest festival and the traditional imagery has been inspired by legends about Calvinist separatist Pilgrims who emigrated from The Netherlands to the “New World” in 1620. These staunchly Christian folks supposedly included select nearby indigenous pagans in their festivities, now and again. A brief history of Devil-themed songs of the 1910s, followed by my rendition of Irving Berlin’s “The Devil Has Bought Up All The Coal” (1918), in honor of Veterans Day 2018. I’ve never heard anybody else perform or record this song; I learned it myself from the sheet music after finding it on the Library of Congress website.
