Happiest of New Years!

Tomorrow begins year XLIII, Anno Satanas. Our year of literature was a smashing success, and indeed there are still more publications to come in the new year. As always, there are myriad projects in the works, particularly video productions, which will debut in the months to come. Our members always do us proud, keeping those Hellfires burning, and it is a pleasure to announce that a few enlightened journalists have been working with us to bring to the world several clear presentations of our philosophy and practices. There will then be no excuses for those who wish to imagine us as other than what we are—a fascinating worldwide cabal of creative carnal animals who embrace Satan as our ensign as we revel in our existence and share that joy we have for life with those whom we cherish.

The Satanic High Mass held in the City of Lost Angels on 6-6-06 continues to send out shockwaves, and soon those who did not attend will be able to see this potent rite on DVD. As the release comes closer it will be our honor to give our members the details before it is released to the general market.

The Church of Satan now has a greater scope than ever before in its history, and those in the past who wished to write it off as an Anton LaVey “cult of personality” or just a local San Francisco oddity must yield to the evidence of our international phalanx of eloquent representatives. They have the courage to stand forth and bring the clarity of our perspective to our numerous tribe members regardless of the culture or language which is their context of origin. These kin know, once they are presented with our concepts, that they are one of us, and are inspired that their fellows are creative aliens who continue a triumphant march towards personal victories that move the world in diabolical ways. These newly self-named Satanists are eager to be counted amongst this shadowy throng, the black fellowship that is the Church of Satan. In so doing the vision of Anton Szandor LaVey burns yet more brightly in their consciousness, and so serves to make him immortal in their memories, as their deeds stand as memorial tribute to our founder’s bravery that brought Satanism forth to exercise the beast in Man.

We are proud to raise our glasses to our Comrades in Darkness in celebration of the advent of another Indulgent New Year:

A Bíblia Satânica

APS - Associação Portuguesa de Satanismo

proudly announces the release of the Portuguese translation of “The Satanic Bible” by Anton Szandor LaVey, the greatest reference worldwide on Satanism.

The book’s first edition, limited to 111 copies, hand numbered and luxuriously presented in hard cover format, will be released through HellOutro Enterprises (APS’s editorial branch, responsible for its publications), reference Hell002. It’s only available at APS’s Online Store, for all those who really appreciate the book in question and the effort involved in this endeavour.

Besides the special binding, this edition also includes a specific introduction to the Portuguese version and a glossary to help understand the translations of original expressions in English without a direct correspondence in the Portuguese language. Katabasis and the Groupies of Orpheus

Mixing lowbrow and fine art elements, David Aronson’s work ranges from whimsical to fantastic, from highly stylized to realistically rendered. Thematically delving into realms of mythology and psychology, the artist says his first intention is to allow “the subconscious mind, the deeper hidden portion of the psyche to express itself” without self-censorship. “Psychic wholeness is achieved by allowing the ‘dark’ elements of my psyche to move into the conscious light of day.” His images often gain their power as embodiments of the hidden language of dream and myth—the hidden language of the psyche.

Aronson’s drawings, paintings and illustrations combine traditional media such as watercolor, ink, graphite and colored pencil with digital media and digital collage. He has created art for CD covers, music posters and tour t-shirts, and is also an oil painter with several public and private commissions. His digital animation has been featured on MTV2 and Fuse and his drawings were featured regularly in BigNews, the New York journal of art and literature, as well as being exhibited nationally in galleries and museum shows. As an art teacher in several media, he works with both children and adults, and was once the sole owner and operator of a small art school in the Philadelphia suburbs. He is also a certified hypnotherapist and a published poet.

“The question of gun ownership in America is a fractious one. Even the number of guns in the country is in significant debate. The National Rifle Association (NRA), the country's largest pro-gun lobbying group, quotes the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE)'s estimate that in 1999 there were about 215,000,000 guns in America and one gun in about half of the households in the country. The Brady Campaign (the nation's leading anti-gun coalition) estimates there are 192,000,000 guns in America, owned by 39% of the population.

This isn't a book about guns. It's a book about people.

Whether it's 39% or 50% of Americans, it's still an awful lot of people. I started wondering just who they were, what they looked like, and how they lived. Such was the genesis of Armed America: Portraits of American Gun Owners in Their Homes. The idea was to photograph a hundred gun owners, in their homes, and do a gallery show. I figured this would take about two years. But very soon after I started, it became evident that my ambitions were too low. My mailbox flooded with letters from people I didn't know wanting to participate -- I realized that I could probably photograph a hundred people in two months, but it wasn't a number of people that was important, it was their stories -- a cowboy in Texas, a survivalist in Montana, a deer hunter in Pennsylvania, a sheriff in Georgia, a soldier in Idaho.... What I really needed, I realized, was to get moving, to drive across the country and find America somewhere between here and there.“

Tomorrow, here in the U.S., is the secular holiday called “Thanksgiving” which originated as a harvest festival amongst Christian pilgrims who came to the “New World.” As such, it was a celebration of the hard work done towards preparing for survival of the frigid Winter months to come, demonstrating a harmony with the cycling of Nature. Similar holidays existed in pre-Christian societies, and always were meant as opportunities for earned excess. In practice, it has evolved over time into an occasion for gathering with family and overeating at a feast. Being Satanists, we naturally support this indulgent banquet, and may take the time when with relatives to deal out our own form of justice, tweaking those who irk us and warmly embracing the ones who add richness to our lives.

May those of you who choose to celebrate enjoy a truly indulgent “Gluttony Day”!

A “Happy Halloween!” to true Satanists the world over.

Magus Gilmore’s perspective concerning this holiday has become a tradition for our site:

Tonight is the night when the mundane folk try to reach down inside and touch the darkness—which for we Satanists is a daily mode of existence. Particularly in the United States, Halloween is a time for celebrating “monster films,” wearing costumes of a macabre nature, and evoking the thrill of “fun fear.” Children of all ages can indulge their fantasies by donning garb that allows for intense role playing and the release of those demonic cores, oft-hidden in the oubliettes of their psyches.

Though there are traditions which make this an occasion for recalling the dead, it has been popularized as a time to play with what historically were fears directed towards the unquiet spirits of the departed. And the grand traditional question “Trick or treat?” has become a means for fulfilling an indulgence in sweets, without the need to resort to the optional coercion. We embrace what this holiday has become, and do not feel the need to be tied to ancient practices. This night, Satanists smile at the amateur explorers of their own inner darkness, for we know that they enjoy their brief dip into the pool of the “shadow world.” So on this eve of magic and mystery, we encourage their tenebrous fantasies, the candied indulgence, and the wide-ranging evocation of our aesthetics (while tolerating some of the chintzy versions), even if it is but once per annum. At other times of the year, when those not of our tribe shake their heads in wonder at us, we can point out that they may find some understanding by examining their own All Hallows Eve doings, as an alternative to our recent favored saying: “We’re just part of the Addams clan.”

So, have an indulgent, mysterious, and deeply satisfying Samhain!

(There are even sections devoted exclusively to Halloween and devil novelties.) Those horror fans who grew up in the Pacific Northwest during the 1960s and 1970s may want to check out Stine’s website devoted to KIRO-TV’s late-night horror show, Nightmare Theatre, and its host The Count. (www.nightmaretheatrenw.net) This unofficial fan site attempts to exhume the show and its late star, which is threatened to being relegated to the pits of obscurity, due to the fact that only a few minutes of footage survives from the show, which ran almost fourteen years. Also examined are its ties to the local cult phenomenon, The J.P. Patches Show (1958-1981), a surprisingly sophisticated, often risqué children’s program. A non-profit affair, Nightmare Theatre NW offers a history of the show, original program schedules, fan reminisces, and loads of rare photo and art reproductions.

As mentioned earlier, Mr. Stine is offering all Church of Satan members a special promotion, which will be granted upon validation of membership. From 4th - 7th October the ICA will feature six of the best Swedish
erotic celluloid has to offer including a special opening illustrated
lecture on 4th October with Christina Lindberg, Sweden’s premiere
cult/exploitation star, followed on 6th October with double bill Q&A

Lindberg) is forced into addiction and prostitution by a pimp (Heinz

We are very excited to have Christina Lindberg at the ICA for a Q&A
following a screening of Anita, the tale of a teenager who falls into
a self-destructive cycle of sexual encounters, and the young
psychology student (played by Stellan Skarsgård) who plans to save
Anita, introducing her to a world of communal living and classical
music. Lindberg will then introduce the second part of our double
bill, Exposed, a film that mixes flashbacks, fantasies and reality to
tell the story of a teenage woman torn between her young boyfriend and
a sadistic older man (Heinz Hopf). [Dir Torgny Wickman, Sweden/France

The mother of all sex education films! This sparked scandal and a a
huge demonstration in London (led by Cliff Richard) on its release
because it includes scenes of actual-sexual-intercourse, but there’s
also a lot of sexologists talking, smoking and drinking coffee - and
music by Bjorn and Benny, just before they started Abba. Language of
Love is also the film Travis Bickle thought would be a good first-date

Molly

A perfect example of a refined Swedish explicit erotic film from the
70s (based on a novel by Daniel Defoe). Molly (Marie Forså) is in love
with the rich and depraved Peter (Charles Canyon, aka Eric Pollard
from Emmerdale Farm!), who arranges orgies on the French Riviera. When
her feelings are not answered by Peter, Molly marries his impotent

Klubb Super 8
Research outfit/film archive/DVD company dedicated to Swedish
exploitation cinema - a part of Swedish film history that never really
have been studied properly. Klubb Super 8 investigates this period
through research, seminars, film club screenings and the release of
films on DVD, with extensive bonus materials, like new documentaries.
A book on the subject is also being planned.

Christina Lindberg
Sweden’s most famous centerfold and exploitation film star, with more
than 22 roles in films from Sweden, Germany, Japan and Tunisia.

The revenge story and Christina's character with an eye-patch in the
film Thriller is one of the inspirations for Quentin Tarantino’s Kill

In October and November—those months of All Saints and All Souls—GERM honors the artistic legacy of our late founder, Jennifer Bates.

Jennifer opened our store in 2004 as a place to “sell books that she wanted to sell.” Thus, Black Magic, Conspiracy, Science Fiction and Cultural Pessimism filled shelves with labels like “War and Why We Need It”, “Theories Science Doesn’t Like” and “Why Thomas Edison Sucks”. She later expanded on the concept of her “business model”: GERM was actually her latest means of artistic expression, and, finally, GERM was a repository of a “stolen future”, the one lost when striving for the stars somehow morphed into settling for the gutter.

As one might expect, the Occult, particularly Kabbalah, hangs heavily over her well-rendered pieces that initially recall surrealism and Pop in their juxtaposition of the sacred and the profane, the sterile and the organic—you know, all those things that aesthetically please when juxtaposed.

While Jennifer Bates’ work utilized the elements of surrealism and Pop, she disciplined these elements into a cosmological thesis as clarified as any of the great classicists. In contrast to the random transmissions of a degenerate subconscious, she writes in her description of the seemingly inscrutable “The Events Prior” that “nothing ever happens without warning.” To her, the subconscious was a puzzle piece of a shredded map to enlightenment; it did not serve as enlightenment itself. She painted in a studio with the following quote tacked to its wall: “Painting was recognized as an activity based, like science and theology and law, on the great principle on which Western Civilization was built: there is an Order behind the ephemera of appearances which it is the duty and glory of thinking men to discover and reveal and employ.” (Alan Gowans, The Restless Art)

Beyond surface comparisons to Magritte or the post-Warholians, Jennifer drew inspiration from a pantheon of personal heroes who would have made for quite the contentious dinner party: from Aleister Crowley to Nikola Tesla, from Lenny Bruce to Joseph Goebbels, from Howard Hughes to Dee Dee Ramone. To Jennifer, the politics of her Immortals were less than secondary to their clarity of vision with regard to humanity, its place in the cosmos and their personal needs to alter destiny through WILL (yes, even Dee Dee). By the way, that’s my analysis, not hers.

I’ll conclude with Jennifer’s favorite quote from one of her favorite monsters: “If the day should ever come when we must go, if some day we are compelled to leave the scene of history, we will slam the door so hard that the universe will shake and mankind will stand back in stupefaction…”

Germ kicks off our extremely busy Fall schedule with a Very Special Crop Circles Lecture and Powerpoint Presentation on Thursday, September 27, at 7PM with Jennifer Stein of the Mutual UFO Network.

Jennifer is the coordinator for Main Line MUFON, "The Bleep Group," and Noetic Sciences of the Main Line. She is also the South Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Area State Representative for MUFON.

In her research of crop circles on location with Nancy Talbut, Linda Howe, Chet Snow, Bert Janson and Rubin Urdiarte, she has made several trips to England and Canada and is a member of the ICCRA (International Crop Circle Research Association, under the direction of Jeffrey Wilson).

Her presentation at GERM will focus on current theories offered by the research experts as possible explanations for unusual biological evidence in the material studied, and also explain why the real story of the crop circles remains a mystery.
